Mother Teresa is attributed with saying, “I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.” I am writing this with the hope that you will help me cast a stone to create a ripple in behalf of a condition called Hyperemesis Gravidarum. What is Hyperemesis Gravidarum? First it is important to understand what it is not. It is not severe morning sickness, though it is commonly confused as such. Hyperemesis Gravidarum is a condition that affects 0.5-3% of all pregnant women and consists of starvation, dehydration, and severe weight loss.
My husband Brian and I have been blessed with three beautiful children, and I have endured Hyperemesis Gravidarum with all three of my pregnancies. Each pregnancy was worse than the preceding one. With my first pregnancy, I only needed an IV fluid regime and was able to gain ten pounds during the pregnancy. With my second pregnancy, I required a nasojejunal feeding tube and only gained five pounds by 39 weeks. Finally, with my third pregnancy, I required three hospitalizations by the time I was just six weeks along. I was discharged with a nasojejunal feeding tube and home health IV fluids. At 18 weeks, I developed cysts and ulcers in my ear and throat from the nasojejunal feeding tube, necessitating surgery to place a PEG-J feeding tube, a feeding tube placed through the abdominal wall into the stomach with an extension that bypasses the stomach and rests in the jejunum. In the days following the initial surgery I vomited so hard and so often that the extension was pulled from my intestine into my stomach, something that isn't supposed to be possible. I had the surgery repeated again a week later and had the tube stapled in place. In addition to these complications, I also endured prodromal labor, vomiting blood, infection from the chafing of my feeding tube, being completely unable to eat any food or drink any fluid for the duration of my pregnancy, burst blood vessels in my eyes, chronic bleeding lips from dehydration, fainting spells, extreme fatigue that left me nearly unable to leave my bed, and so much more.
Multiple physicians have expressed their fear that due to the severity of Hyperemesis Gravidarum that I experience that choosing to grow our family through biological means may be life threatening for me. This news was devastating, as we feel strongly that we are meant to have more children and that we have so much more love to give. Because of this, it is now our hope to grow our family through the miracle of adoption. Please join us on the journey of a lifetime, Our Adoption Adventure!
